Where the Silk Road trips cross from Kyrgyzstan: the Red Castles valley at Charyn Canyon, a city walk through Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral, the Saka burial mounds and the Golden Man at Esik, cheese and wine at a family farm outside Almaty — and a glass of wild apple cider in the city the apple comes from. Silk Road by Train opens in Astana and takes the overnight fast train down.

The mountain half of the region. Felt and shyrdak carpets with the women's collectives, a yurt built in front of the group, eagle hunters and a kok boru match, then the walking: Song Kul over the Jalgyz Karagai pass, Jeti-Oguz, and the Telety and Ala Kul passes at 3,800 m before the hot springs at Altyn Arashan.

The country every itinerary passes through, and the one we've made hands-on: the Rahimov family's pottery in Tashkent, silk at the Yodgorlik factory in the Fergana Valley, carpet weaving in Khiva and Bukhara, a suzani master's embroidery, tandoor bread in the hills above Samarkand.
